Upper gastro intestinal bleed: causes, endoscopic profile and usefulness of Rockall score in determining the outcome

Background: Upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage is defined as any bleeding from a site in the tract proximal to ligament of Treitz (fore-gut). Patients with present wide range clinical severity ranging trivial bleeds fulminant and lethal exsanguinations. It associated multiple risk factors co-morbid condition. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted tertiary care hospital. total 56 patients who were subjected endoscopy studied for 6 months. Appropriate statistical method had been applied wherever needed. Results: In population among patients, most common cause UGIB variceal bleed 45 (80%); age group belonged 40-59 years, Grade III varices commonly found 23 (52%). The mean Rockall score 4.7 which indicated that belong moderate group. need packed red blood cell transfusion chances rebleeding more high-risk compared low Patient mortality only observed Conclusions: GI beneficial both diagnostic therapeutic treatment UGIB. helped identifying has correlate well outcome, including transfusions, mortality, may be used effective triage patients.
